My mother believed that no child—girl or boy—should be denied an education simply because of where they were born. Now I want to finish what she started.

I was born in a remote mountain village in central Afghanistan, where war, oppression and isolation have denied generations of children something most of us take for granted: a proper classroom.

My mother, Sabar Gul, spent much of her life standing up for peace, justice and education. Even during years of war, she helped children learn including her own children’s boys and girls equally. I was one of those children. The opportunities she fought to create became the foundation of my own education—a journey that eventually took me from our small village in Afghanistan to the London School of Economics and Political Science – LSE.

She wanted other children to have that same chance. In 2018, she donated her own piece of land so that one day a proper school could be built for the children of her village. But without funding, that dream remained just that. Children continued learning in makeshift tents, enduring freezing mountain winters and scorching summers.

Then the community decided it could wait no longer. Local families, many with very little themselves, began contributing whatever they could, even if it was donating their livestock’s such a chicken or a goat they had for a living. Together, they raised enough money to finally begin construction. The school is now under construction—but the money is running out, and the community has no longer have anything to offer.

My mother sadly passed away in July 2026 without seeing the school completed.

I cannot bring her back. But I can try and fulfil her wishes – help a child get an education.

In her memory, I have made it my mission to help complete this school and give these children something she believed in all her life: the chance to learn, to dream and to build a future beyond the circumstances into which they were born.

We have come too far to leave this school unfinished.

Professional development for frontline staff

Supporting the Integration of Refugees, Asylum Seekers, and migrants

This professional development programme is designed for frontline and operational staff who work directly with refugees, asylum seekers, and other newcomers, and who play a critical role in supporting their integration into local communities and public services.

The programme equips practitioners to work confidently and consistently with displaced and migrant populations by strengthening their ability to communicate in culturally appropriate ways, manage expectations clearly and respectfully, and navigate complex environments where policy requirements, lived experience, cultural difference, and public expectations intersect—ultimately supporting more effective integration and community cohesion.
